Whether you plan to self-publish or seek out an agent or publisher, you will need to have your text professionally edited. This is not an extra selling point, but a basic requirement, if you wish a chance at being successful in a fiercely competitive market.

Editing the manuscript yourself or having friends help out is useful, but what is needed to ensure that your manuscript will be seriously considered is a professional editor with specialized skills, acquired through years of experience and study.

Editing Services

Following is a short description of the full range of editing services we provide, consisting of three components--Copy Editing, Editing Advice, and Substantive Editing. Authors normally do not need all three components.

Copy Editing will ensure that your book meets the standards expected of a professionally published book, in terms of grammar, punctuation, hyphenation, word usage, and spelling. In addition, we will read the text for coherence, consistency, and sense, and verify the accuracy of dates, names, and places.

Copy Editing also involves tightening up and polishing the text. This includes rewriting ungrammatical, awkward sentences, eliminating unnecessary repetition, and removing superfluous words that clog up the flow of the text and obscure its meaning.

Importantly, we provide a fresh, needed, objective look at your work. We will see to it that the words, sentences, and paragraphs you write mean what you intend them to mean.

Editing Advice consists of making suggestions on how you can improve your manuscript. If this type of editing is needed, we will point out flaws and explain in detail how to fix them.

Occasionally authors need more help with their manuscripts than either Copy Editing or Editing Advice can provide—they need Substantive Editing. This may involve major restructuring of the material, renaming, eliminating, or adding chapters. A bibliography and/or footnotes and citations may also need to be created.

I highly recommend the editorial services of Jens Petersen. As a first-time author, I was very blessed to find Jens. Not only does he have tremendous knowledge of literature, he is professional, thorough, and patient. I hired him to edit my novel, but in the process found a partner who shared my vision. He taught me many things along the way, and guided me to become a better writer. I have much to learn in this new career, but I can't thank Jens enough for helping me get started. I wish him all the success in the world—he deserves it.

I cannot say enough good about Jens and his editing. I have written many magazine articles and lately have published a book—all of which Jens edited (he probably needs to edit this for me too). His suggestions for changes are always clear. He seems to get the gist of what I’m trying to say and he helps put my confused thoughts into understandable sentences.

He was such an encouragement and help with my book and his advice was always so pertinent. I truly appreciated that!

Thank you, Jens, for your brilliant editing of my published book, If We Are the Body, Why Are the Broken-Hearted Not Healed? Jens could foresee the book in my writings. His thoughtful comments and observations throughout the editing process helped guide me in the telling of my story. Jens' superb editorial skills helped him to weave my words into the book I dreamed of. I couldn't have done it without Jens. His tireless effort helped to not only make my book possible but truly do it justice.

I often have clients who are in need of an editor, a service which my company doesn't offer directly. The moment that a client asks me for a recommendation of an editor, Jens is one of the first editors that come to my mind.

Always an amazing professional to work with, Jens produces high quality work, and an even higher quality of customer service. I have yet to send a client Jens' way without receiving a plethora of positive comments about the work that he performed afterwards.

I have always, and will continue to, recommend Jens to all of my clients looking for editorial services, without a second thought.

With my acknowledgement that I needed an editor, with German being my native tongue, but this book of course being published in English, I contacted Jens, providing him an initial set of pages on August 1, 2007. My concerns in editing related to my wish to maintain my personality, my enthusiasm, my passion, as well as my frustrations and indeed anguish in my CUSO-volunteer work as Farm Manager of the 25-family Paniya colony in southern India. At the same time, I wished to keep to the language I used in my letters in 1966-67, then a 24-25 year old.

On August 13th, I received the first trial of five double-spaced pages edited by Jens. I cheerfully accepted Jens to edit my book. He provided very thoughtful explanatory comments throughout. While I had warned him of my ‘German sentence structure’, initially he thought I was joking. However, he soon ascertained that I was indeed serious. Nevertheless, he soldiered on! On October 2nd, I received the final edited copy. Friends and family members who have known me some time have repeatedly commented that my book still sounds like me although the sentence structure has been changed. That is precisely what a great editor can achieve. Thanks, Jens!

Jens just completed editing my first book for me. He was professional and knowledgeable, providing me with suggestions on how I could do better. My book, Service, Please! would not be a finished product today had Jens not taken a leadership role in ensuring my work was up to par. He is a true perfectionist with a no-nonsense approach and very much appreciated.

Well done, Jens, my dream only became a reality with your due diligence! I look forward to working with you again.

Thank you so much for your patience and effort with my first book.

Your editorial skills came highly recommended, and it is easy to see why! You took a crazy notion of mine and turned it into a book which I am very proud of. My manuscript would have probably sat for years collecting dust, but now I am planning my book launch!

I can’t wait to complete my next book, knowing that you are there with your expertise to support my efforts. It has given me the courage to follow my dreams!

Thank you so much for your kind words and guiding hand with this project. I look forward to working with you again in the near future!

I can’t say enough about how much Jens helped me through the editing process on my book. Beyond just editing, he offers guidance, support, and education concerning every aspect of creating a book people will want to read. He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy who tells it like it is—so that the best work possible is produced. In the process, he'll also help you become a better writer.

Working with Jens has been money and time very well spent, and I encourage you to take advantage of the knowledge and skills he brings to the table.

When I asked Jens Petersen to edit my The Seven Seeds manuscript, I felt like a new mother reaching out for help with her triplets. I am sure Jens would probably agree, as it was a mammoth project to take on. Thankfully he took me on, and together we did it.

As an author who put her heart and soul into a writing project for seven years, I knew I had reached my limits, and I needed Jens’ expertise. Having worked with Jens before, I already knew he was a talented editor. He took my very large manuscript and over time helped turn it into something very special. The diligence and attention to detail that he applied in perfecting
The Seven Seeds will always be appreciated.

Jens not only edited my words, he checked facts and tightened and fine-tuned the prose. In addition, he gave me honest and sound advice on the content which helped me become a successful author with a published book that I can be proud of. I have a new appreciation for the English language, as well as an admiration for what he knows about it.

With gratitude,
